On the SBE22 conference in Berlin Georg Hubmann and me presented the fruitful results of our paper “circular material systems: anticipating whole-system design in architecture and construction”. Also, our exhibition on circular best practice case-studies throughout whole Europe was showcased at the Technische Universität Berlin. Delighted with the insightful discussions that motivate me to continue bridging on the topic of circularity in architecture and construction between academic and practice!

In collaboration with fellow architect Mercurio Alvarado Mendez, we have worked on a few different projects. We developed a multi-year plan for a private client and their new property in the greater Brisbane area. We advised on design, construction, plant types and liaison with council. For their 12 acres property, we proposed a veggie path, bike lane, water pond with retaining wall, native plant section and a natural amphitheater. In the back garden we made a detailed design for a swimming pool, fire pit and outdoor cinema area. Based on the 4 elements, water, fire, earth and air.

bamboo as regenerative material
- an exploration of possibilities of bamboo connection while building, designing and harvesting this regenerative material around Woodford, Queensland Australia -
For 28 days together with a crew of 50 participants - architects from all over the world - build on the various bamboo structures. From designing, connecting, fetching, harvesting to decorating with this material for the 6 days festival. Understanding the closed loop this material makes by working in every part of the process. in transition towards a circular future
- an exploration of potential implementation of circular resource management, by social-ecological spatial and systemic interventions along the Nairobi river, Kenya -
This graduation project addresses the problem of waste management in Nairobi, Kenya. The current inadequate waste management throughout Nairobi remains a spatial challenge as it contributes to health concerns, threatens local ecologies, and degrades public space. Analyzing waste flows, the social construct and in particular community-based-organizations which are catalyzing local challenges to enhance community participation brings forth a set of solutions. By combining circular economy principles, the strengths of community-based-organizations and proposing schools as collection point, this study develops a roadmap towards a circular, healthy and green future. By defining a spatial program at the urban river front of the Nairobi River, as well systemic interventions this roadmap has ambition to improve the local environment and give answer to local needs.

The builder a building building buildings
Berlin is one big construction site. Every 53 meters there is a construction site, in a total of around 500 sites across the city. Not only the amount, also the size and the time these sites occupying the street are playing a disruptive element in daily life. At the same time Berlin is in need of housing units, at least 40.000 units – which is 2% of the existing stock – should be build every year. To solve these two problems ‘the builder’ is a modular structure that conveys an open-air-workshop lifted above street level. It is celebrating the DIY-culture of Berlin while it is addressing local manufacturers to produce on site. By 3D-printing an innovative building kit, this machine uses the city as urban mine: use waste as resource for material and as output housing units. The urban strategy to intensify the existing structure by phases, starts with filling up empty plots, followed by building on top of roofs.

collaborative common scapes | shifting the AMA system towards a prosuming mindset
The AMA aims at a front running position in the field of Circular Economy. However, the governmental system is more focused on top-down regulations. One important stakeholders’ group is left out: the end users. In order to achieve the circular movement, it is essential to achieve a mindset shift among end users by comprehensive participation. By programmatic, procedural and spatial interventions, the goal is to create a network of interventions that stimulates a prosuming lifestyle and the collaboration between local stakeholders. AMA has a variety of scapes with distinctive characteristics such as typology, accessibility, connectivity, production form, and role in the production chain. Each has specific spatial qualities and centralities, which can be the opportunity for interventions. While focussing on these opportunity areas, our project works with principles that can be adapted to local conditions. Engaging with site specific aspects, the catalogue of interventions provide functional implementation to become resilient and socially inclusive. Strategically three focus areas has been chosen based on spatial and social criteria to implement the first living labs. Assessment on feasibility evaluation will guide the direction of future development. In this manner, a resilient strategy for the region is realised.

Together with a divers group of 200 enthusiasts with different disciplines and expertise worked on 'challenge driven innovative projects that tackle sustainability'. During a 10-day intensive program, worked together with as final presentation the test pilot at the festival 'Welcome to the Village'. This as part of the Leiden, Delft, Erasmus- collaboration. In 2017 work with studio DAVERO on the Project Puzzle Peace, we together designed and build circular festival furniture. Later the studio developed the concept to real products.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
For the 175th anniversary of the TU Delft, our multi-disciplinary team of 7 students was assigned to create a symbol that represented the mindset of the TU Delft. For a full half year we dedicated our time to brainstorm, explore, map, prototype, design, create and actually build a temporary and circular pavilion located in front of the Auditorium at the campus in Delft. Symbolic every visitor could leave a mark and in the spirit of the university, contribute to a bigger whole.
